Rules & Regulations
THE RACE WILL BE RUN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING RULES:
(This race is classed as an elite race for disabled wheelchair racers)
Part 1 The Wheelchair
1. Wheels
a. Wheelchairs should have at least three (3) wheels.
b. The diameter of two (2) large wheels, including the inflated tyre, shall not exceed 70 centimetres. Other wheels shall not exceed 50 centimetres in diameter including the inflated tyre.
c. Only one (1) push rim shall be attached to each large wheel.
2. Dimensions
a. No maximum length rule in effect.
b. The widest measurement of the wheelchair shall be a straight line measured from the outside edge of the push rim or the tyre, whichever is greater at the widest point. No part of the wheelchair may protrude beyond the width of this measurement.
c. Nothing shall extend out the back of the chair beyond the rear wheels.
3. Propulsion/ Steering
a. Propulsion and direct steering of the wheelchair shall be made by the hands and arms only.
b. No gears, levers, chains or any other mechanical device may be used in propelling the wheelchair.
c. There shall be no device as part of the wheelchair or athlete that functions for the sole purposes of reducing air resistance.
4. Safety
a. Athletes must ensure that no part of their lower limbs can fall to the ground during an event.
b. An athlete's wheelchair must be structurally sound (i.e. no cracks in the frame or welds; no loose or missing spokes, etc.).
c. An athlete must be securely seated in the wheelchair and will remain so while racing.
5. Compliance
a. It will be the responsibility of the athlete to conform to all the aforementioned rules, and no event shall be delayed while an athlete makes adjustments.
Part 2 Start of the Race
1. Wheelchair racers shall at no time-share a simultaneous start with foot runners. Note: The most common head start allots to the wheelchair division falls within a range of 5 to 15 minutes.
2. The wheelchair race official must ensure that lead vehicles maintain a safe non-draftable distance ahead of wheelchair race participants.
Part 3 Finish of the Race
1. The finish of a race shall be judged when a front tyre first penetrates the imaginary vertical plane passing through the leading edge of the finish line.
Part 4 Racing Conduct
1. Competitors who suffer a mishap may be assisted in remounting. Assistance must be provided in a manner and location so as to not impede the progress of other race participants and must be provided in a manner so as not to impart pace or forward assistance to the participant.
2. A racer may be penalised for causing a crash or spill through inadequate tightening or adjustment of his or her chair components.
3. When racing in proximity to foot runners, wheelchair racers must have sufficient control of their wheelchairs to yield the right-of-way to the foot runners. In every case, the ultimate right-of-way belongs to the runner; all klaxons and warning devices are therefore banned. The failure of a wheelchair racer to yield right-of- way may result in disqualification. Remember a wheelchair is a potential hazard to a competitor on foot- one collision can lead to serious and permanent injury.
4. Realise that accidents are caused by sudden changes of speed or direction; be aware of runners who may do this near to drink stations. Carry your own liquid refreshment to avoid using drinks stations.
5. Always obey instructions from race officials, marshals and police.
Part 4 Advertising
Clothing
a. a club name on the right chest only which must be no more than 40 sq cms, with a maximum height of 4cm. A club logo if used instead has a maximum height of 5cms.
Or
b. a club sponsors name or logo may appear on the right chest instead, maximum dimensions as above.
NOTE
ISMWSF allows these on front or back of vest, but not on both.
And
c. A manufacturers name or logo may appear on the left chest of a vest, maximum sizes as above.
However, manufacturers logos/ names are allowed once per garment with the following limits.
Shorts/ tights- max 20 sq cms with max height 4cm
All measurements are taken when the clothing is being worn.
Wheelchair
Manufacturers brand name or trademark may appear once on each piece of equipment.
NOTE For this purpose the wheelchair is regarded as three pieces of equipment- 2 large wheels and the frame.
